What Happens at the End of Monster Island?

How Monster Island (2025) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

When the wreckage of the hell‑ship sinks, Saito and Bronson find themselves alone on a deserted island. After a wary first night—marked by a brief clash, a shared gun, and the discovery of other bodies—they learn to communicate through gestures and eventually break the iron cuff that bound them together. Their uneasy alliance is tested when a mysterious, fish‑like monster attacks a group of Japanese soldiers who have also reached the shore; the creature’s fury hints that something more personal lies beneath its rage.

Exploring further, Saito discovers a hidden cave that contains a single, still‑developing offspring of the monster. He realizes the beast is protecting its unborn child after a pilot, whose crashed aircraft had killed one of its kind, left it seeking vengeance. Bronson, desperate to eliminate the threat, proposes using a missile salvaged from the wreck to blow the cave up. Saito reluctantly agrees, and while they haul the explosives toward the cavern, the monster seizes Bronson, leaving Saito to fire at the creature’s eye. In the chaos Bronson is gravely wounded, and Saito, driven by hopelessness, detonates the charge and also destroys the embryo, provoking a desperate, anguished scream from the mother.

The final showdown takes place on a beach where Saito, armed with his katana, lures the monster into a trap made from a dead Japanese soldier. With the creature momentarily confused, he strikes it, wounding it badly. At the brink of delivering a killing blow, Saito hesitates—he understands that the monster’s aggression stems from loss and fear, not malice. Choosing restraint, he lets the creature retreat, an act that suggests peace is possible even amid the horrors of war.

Rescued the next day by an American destroyer, Saito is debriefed by naval officers. He speaks of Bronson as a British comrade and explains that he had killed his own commander to save his men, a story that spares him from punishment after Japan’s surrender. When asked if anyone else survived the island, he says no, keeping silent about the Orang Ikan. By withholding that knowledge, he protects the creature from becoming a trophy for human curiosity, reinforcing the film’s closing message: empathy and restraint can break the cycle of violence.
