What Happens at the End of Mononoke the Movie: Chapter II - The Ashes of Rage?

How Mononoke the Movie: Chapter II - The Ashes of Rage (2025) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The film closes on the blood‑stained council chamber where the power struggle over the imperial heir finally erupts. Councilor Otomo openly admits that he has ordered the elimination of Lady Fuki’s unborn child so the traditional line of succession—controlled by his allies—will remain intact. His confession triggers the fiery Mononoke Hinezumi, the spirit that has been haunting the harem ever since the tragic death of Lady Suzu twenty years earlier.

Hinezumi reveals its true nature: it is the wrathful echo of Suzu’s guilt‑flame, born when she was forced to abort her own child under Otomo’s orders. The spirit’s burning form engulfs the room, consuming Otomo, the scheming Lady Matsu and her father Lord Katsunuma, and turning the chamber into a void‑like inferno. When Kusuriuri—the Medicine Seller—arrives, he discerns the spirit’s form, truth, and reason, allowing him to cleave the flame with his divine sword and end Hinezumi’s rage.

With the conspirators reduced to ash, the power vacuum is filled by Councilor Fujimaki, who pledges to respect the emperor’s wishes. He grants Lady Fuki the right to raise her child herself, rejecting the old custom of assigning a guardian from an elite family. Botan, having proven her loyalty to the empire over her father, receives a new pass from Kusuriuri, indicating she will remain a protector of the harem’s balance.

The final scene lingers on the dim corridors of Ooku, where a single paper in Kusuriuri’s hand mysteriously ignites and the lamps over Fuki’s chambers burn brighter—signs that the lingering spirit has not been fully exorcised. A serpent mural on the walls slithers of its own accord, foreshadowing the next confrontation in the trilogy.
