What Happens at the End of Mongrels?

How Mongrels (2024) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The film closes with a quiet, hopeful ritual that finally lets the family breathe. After months of turmoil—Sonny’s brutal hunts, the loss of his wife, and the children’s growing distance—Hana’s birthday becomes the turning point. Scott Larson gifts her a bicycle, and she rides it out to the familiar sunflower field, the place that once held the first tender memory of her mother. Sonny, Hajoon and Hana gather by the lake, where they spread their mother’s ashes. In the act of scattering the soil, they each let out a raw, animal‑like howl, a primal call toward the woman they have lost. As Hana turns, a lone dog stands at the water’s edge, its presence echoing the film’s motif of the mongrels and suggesting that the spirit of their mother is still watching over them.

This shared moment dissolves the walls Sonny had built around his grief. He finally acknowledges his children’s pain, and Hajoon’s earlier rebellion softens into a quiet acceptance. The family, though still feeling the ache of absence, steps forward as a united unit, ready to support one another. The final scene, with the dog’s steady gaze and the lingering scent of sunflowers, implies that while the wound will never fully close, the living can find solace in each other and in the lingering traces of the past.
