In West Virginia, Boomer Baxter is preparing to set mountain-top depletion explosives on a mountain. He detonates the TNT, causing an unprecedented earthquake that devastates the surrounding area. This event marks the beginning of the catastrophic geological activity.

The earthquake triggered by Boomer's explosion is powerful enough to open a deep fault running through the center of North America. The quake causes significant destruction and proves to be unprecedented in scale.

Seismologist Dr. Amy Lane arrives at the earthquake's epicenter a few hours after the event. She quickly realizes that the quake has opened a fault that could have catastrophic consequences for North America.

Dr. Lane discovers that the new fault extends through the continent and connects to the San Andreas Fault. This fault poses a threat of larger earthquakes and tsunamis that could devastate major cities along the Pacific Ocean.

Dr. Lane and Boomer develop a plan to prevent further instability by using a satellite that can trigger earthquakes remotely. Their goal is to control the fault's movement and prevent catastrophic events.

The team fires the satellite when they reach the Grand Canyon, aiming to direct the fault to turn south into the Gulf of Mexico. However, the fault unexpectedly shifts north instead of south, complicating their plans.

The fault continues traveling north, heading towards the Yellowstone Caldera. The team realizes that if the fault reaches the caldera, it could cause an enormous volcanic eruption by expelling ash into the atmosphere.

To prevent a catastrophic eruption, Boomer and Dr. Lane decide to set explosives along the fault's path near Yellowstone. Their aim is to halt the fault's progression before it can reach the caldera and trigger a volcanic winter.

Boomer sets off the explosives at Yellowstone, successfully stopping the fault short of the caldera. His sacrifice prevents a volcanic eruption but costs him his life. The event averts a disaster involving massive ash clouds and widespread death.

The movie concludes with a satellite view of the United States, revealing a huge canyon stretching miles across the continent. This visual signifies the long-lasting impact of the earthquakes and the geological changes caused by the fault's movement.
