Harvard graduate Bruce McVeagh escapes San Francisco and establishes himself as a self‑styled king on a remote South Sea island. Assisted by his erratic first‑mate ‘Pearly’ Gates, he controls the native population with a steady supply of gin and a dreaded torture rack for dissenters. His fragile regime begins to crumble when his former lover Nancy Darrell is shipwrecked on the island, just as the increasingly restless natives launch an armed rebellion against his tyranny.
