Estefânia, an old, wealthy, strict Catholic, notices two impoverished servants unable to raise their youngest son, António. She arranges for him to enter the seminary, and the parents, local priest and rector consent, while António complies out of obedience. Removed from rural hardship into the regimented seminary, his doubts and inner anguish grow.
