What Happens at the End of Lot 36?

How Lot 36 (2022) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The climax of Lot 36 sees the protagonist, Nick, sealing his own fate through a combination of desperation and unchecked greed. After discovering that the storage unit he purchased contains occult artifacts belonging to a Nazi war criminal, he is offered a significant sum to retrieve a final book. Ignoring the warnings of his buyer, Roland, Nick breaks a seal keeping a Lovecraftian demon contained. This decision proves fatal. The creature, a horrific amalgamation of human remains and tentacles, is not simply a beast but a predator that feeds on hate and malice. It attacks Roland first, but the horror truly hits home when Nick attempts to flee the warehouse.

In a moment of poetic justice, Nick finds himself trapped at the exit. Emilia, the woman he heartlessly brushed off earlier, stands on the other side of the locked door. She refuses to help him, mirroring his earlier refusal to assist her in retrieving her sentimental belongings. However, the reason she survives the encounter is crucial: the demon does not attack her. While Emilia denies Nick his freedom, she lacks the inherent darkness that the entity requires for sustenance. The ending underscores the moral framework of the story, revealing that the monster acts as a judge of the soul, sparing the innocent while devouring those tainted by bigotry and evil.

Ultimately, the ending is a grim morality tale where Nick’s character flaws become his undoing. Throughout the episode, Nick is painted as a deeply hateful individual—he is racist, intolerant, and self-centered. When the demon is unleashed, it specifically targets him because his soul is ripe with the "evil" it craves. Even though Nick’s initial motivation was survival—paying off a debt to dangerous mobsters—his choices were consistently rooted in selfishness. By contrast, Emilia, who suffers loss and indignity, maintains a moral compass that keeps her safe from the eldritch horror. The story concludes with the realization that the true monster in the warehouse was the hatred Nick carried inside him all along.
