Darryl and Vanessa are fooled because Calvin is actually a midget, making his small stature believable as an infant. The disguise includes typical baby items like a diaper and bonnet, and the couple is genuinely excited about expecting their first child, which clouds their judgment. Their emotional investment in the situation prevents them from seeing the obvious clues.

Foreshadowing: Calvin's height is established when he's released from prison and discovers he's a midget.
