Dara’s journey at the end of "Like a House on Fire" is about acceptance and personal growth. Throughout the film, she struggles with her mental health, inherited from her mother Katherine, who abandoned her and her sister when Dara was young. Dara’s postpartum depression and her mental scars from childhood cause her to disappear after childbirth, much like her mother did. When she finally finds her mother, Katherine, Dara confronts her about her own feelings of guilt and her past. She admits she left her own daughter because she wasn't ready to handle motherhood, but she’s now seeking help and trying to heal. This moment of honesty reveals Dara’s understanding that love cannot be forced; it must be given freely, without expectation.

Realizing that she cannot compel her daughter, Isabel, to reciprocate her feelings, Dara chooses to let go of her past mistakes. She divorces Danny, the father of her child, so he can start a new life with Therese, and commits herself to personal change. She moves into a modest apartment, working as a waitress, and vows to become a better mother and person, not through demands but with patience and love. The ending shows Dara visiting Isabel again, making an honest effort to connect, symbolizing her hope for a fresh start. It’s a quiet, emotional conclusion that highlights how healing can come from acceptance, acknowledging that she may not get everything right immediately, but she’s willing to try again and again. The film leaves viewers with a message that love and healing are ongoing processes, and sometimes, the most important step is simply forgiving oneself and making peace with the past.}
