Light of My Life (2019) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Light of My Life (2019), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened, and what it all means.

Almost a decade has passed since a devastating pandemic decimated the majority of the female population. Amidst this backdrop, Dad (Casey Affleck) embarks on a perilous journey across British Columbia with his daughter Rag (Anna Pniowsky), who is among the very few remaining females in existence. To shield her from predatory male bandits on the hunt for women, Dad disguises Rag as his son. Haunted by the promise he made to his late wife, Mom (Elisabeth Moss), Dad vows to share with Rag all there is to know about her mother.

After a few days in a wooded campsite, they seek refuge in an abandoned house. Their brief respite is shattered when four intruders attempt to break in, forcing them to escape once more. In desperation, Dad hijacks a car to reach his grandparents’ home, thinking it a safer haven.

Upon arrival, they discover that their sanctuary has been taken over by Tom (Tom Bower) and his companions, Calvin (Hrothgar Mathews) and Lemmy (Timothy Webber). Tom, a devout man, welcomes them with open arms. As evening falls, Dad and Rag stealthily relocate their possessions to a nearby cabin, a precaution for a “red alert”—a term for imminent danger that Dad employs to keep Rag cautious. The following morning, Tom teaches Rag how to handle a shotgun for protection.

Growing increasingly suspicious, Tom confronts Dad, questioning whether the “son” he sees is truly a daughter. Revealing the tragic loss of nine female relatives—eight to the virus and one to “a pack of monsters”—Tom’s concern deepens. Struck by the gravity of Tom’s story, Dad reveals the truth about Rag, displaying a family photograph, and explaining that Rag’s full name is Anna Elizabeth, affectionately shortened to Raggedy Ann.

Tragedy strikes when three men invade their temporary home, mercilessly slaying Tom and Lemmy, with Calvin betraying them to the attackers. Rag and Dad manage to hide in the attic, and he bravely lowers her out of a window before engaging the intruders. In a desperate battle, Dad succeeds in taking down two of the assailants, but faces near defeat at the hands of the last. Just when hope seems lost, Rag fires the shotgun to save her father but unintentionally injures him in the process.

They retreat to the cabin, and Rag dutifully removes the pellet from Dad’s wound. As he recuperates, a poignant flashback recalls his vow to Mom, promising to protect their daughter. Once Rag tends to his injury, Dad shares his plans to take them to the safe haven Tom spoke of. Overwhelmed with emotion, he breaks down, only to find solace in Rag’s comforting embrace, echoing the love that Mom used to provide.

Q1

Why does Dad disguise Rag as his son?

A.

Dad disguises Rag as his son because the world is filled with predatory male bandits who hunt women. Since the pandemic wiped out most of the female population, women, especially young girls, are extremely valuable and targeted. By dressing Rag as a boy and keeping her identity hidden, Dad hopes to protect her from being captured or harmed.

Early in the journey, Dad emphasizes the importance of this disguise, showing how constant danger shapes every decision they make.

Q2

Why does Dad decide to go to his grandparents' home?

A.

Q3

Why does Tom become suspicious of Rag?

A.

Tom becomes suspicious because he notices behavioral clues that don't align with how a boy would typically act. As a devout man who lost nine female relatives to the virus and monsters, he understands the importance of protecting women. His suspicion grows from genuine concern for Rag's safety and his desire to ensure she's properly protected.

Tom's own tragic losses of eight women to the virus and one to 'monsters' establish why he would be especially vigilant about identifying a hidden girl.

Q4

Why does Dad tell Tom the truth about Rag?

A.

Dad reveals Rag's true identity because Tom's heartfelt confession about losing nine female family members, eight to the virus and one to violent men, moves him deeply. Tom's openness about his own tragedies and his obvious concern for Rag's wellbeing makes Dad trust him enough to show a family photograph and explain that Rag's full name is Anna Elizabeth, nicknamed Raggedy Ann.

Tom's revelation about losing his female relatives demonstrates he can be trusted with the knowledge of another girl's existence.

Q5

Why does Calvin betray them to the intruders?

A.

The exact reason for Calvin's betrayal isn't fully explained, but he leads three men to their temporary home, resulting in the deaths of Tom and Lemmy. Calvin's betrayal appears motivated by self-preservation, he likely cooperated with the attackers to save himself, abandoning the group that had welcomed Dad and Rag.

Q6

Why does Rag accidentally shoot Dad?

A.

Rag shoots Dad accidentally because she's acting out of panic and desperate instinct to save him. When Dad is being overpowered by the final intruder and seems about to be killed, Rag fires the shotgun to defend him. However, since she's inexperienced and the situation is chaotic, the shot goes wide and hits Dad instead of the attacker.

Earlier, Tom teaches Rag how to handle a shotgun, setting up this tragic moment where her newly learned skills lead to unintended harm.

Q7

What does "red alert" mean in the movie?

A.

"Red alert" is Dad's term for imminent danger that he uses to keep Rag constantly vigilant. When they relocate to the cabin as a precaution, Dad treats it as a red alert situation, meaning they need to be ready to flee or defend themselves at any moment. It's a system to prepare Rag for the perpetual threat environment they live in.

After the brutal attack where he nearly died, Rag accidentally shot him, and they lost Tom and Lemmy, the stress finally catches up. Additionally, he's reminded of his vow to his late wife to protect their daughter, and he finds solace in Rag's comforting embrace, mirroring the love his wife once gave him.
