Lisa Mulcahy's film keeps orphaned heiress Maud, suspected murderer Uncle Silas, his claim to guardianship, the dangerous son, fortune and confinement at Bartram-Haugh. It cuts much of the novel's opening, accelerates Maud's arrival and gives sexual violence, pseudomedical control and her resistance a more explicit feminist emphasis. Names and outcomes are adjusted, but the inheritance trap and domestic struggle come directly from Le Fanu's sensation novel.
