In late‑1970s Poland a poet debuts in the literary monthly “Nowy Wyraz,” quickly entering state media and using his status to court officials. An essayist saves him from conscription and, through the essayist’s sister, introduces him to a schizophrenic novelist. After the novelist’s suicide the poet takes the manuscript, publishes it as his own, and gains fame and money as August 1980 erupts.
