Hu Yidao was murdered through a conspiracy orchestrated by his old rival Tian Guinong. Tian bribed Yan Chi to poison Miao Renfeng's sword, intending for Miao to kill Hu Yidao during their duel. However, when Hu Yidao and Miao Renfeng sparred, Hu was accidentally nicked by the poisoned blade and died. Tian then seized the opportunity to raid Hu's home and steal his kung fu manual.

Nan Lan, Hu Yidao's wife, committed suicide immediately after her husband's death. Overcome with grief and unable to survive without him, she chose to join him in death rather than live in a world without her husband.

Yan Chi was bribed by Tian Guinong to poison Miao Renfeng's sword. The poison was applied to the blade itself, so when Miao Renfeng sparred with Hu Yidao, the poisoned sword killed Hu Yidao when it nicked his arm. This allowed Tian Guinong to frame Miao Renfeng for the murder.

Earlier, Tian Guinong watches Miao and Hu sparring with growing jealousy and schemes to push them apart.

Miao Renfeng lost his eyesight due to poison. After the events at the inn 18 years ago, someone, later revealed to be Shi Wancheng (the imposter King of Poison), used a poisoned letter to blind Miao Renfeng as part of Tian Guinong's ongoing scheme.

Hu Fei is the son of Hu Yidao, a respected swordsman who was murdered 18 years ago at the inn. Hu Fei was hidden by his uncle as an infant and raised in secret, never knowing his true parentage until the present day confrontation.

The uncle recognizes Yan Chi as connected to the death of Hu Yidao, hinting at the family's dark past.

The real King of Poison is Cheng Lingsu, a woman whom Hu Fei meets in the Village of Medicine. She helps cure Miao Renfeng's blindness and identifies Shi Wancheng as the imposter who has been impersonating her and using poison on behalf of Tian Guinong.

The uncle hid Hu Fei's true identity to protect him from Tian Guinong, who had ordered Yan Chi to kill the infant and steal Hu Yidao's kung fu manual after the murder at the inn. By keeping Hu Fei ignorant of his heritage, the uncle hoped to keep him safe from the dangerous world of martial arts vendettas.

Cheng Lingsu sacrificed herself to save Hu Fei from Shi Wancheng's forces. She absorbed a deadly poison meant for Hu Fei and triggered a trap that defeated Shi Wancheng's followers, dying from the poison she took into her own body.

Eighteen years ago, Hu Yidao hosted a banquet celebrating the birth of his son Hu Fei. His rivals Miao Renfeng and Tian Guinong arrived to challenge him. During the confrontation, Tian bribed Yan Chi to poison Miao's sword, leading to Hu Yidao's accidental death. Tian then raided Hu's home while Nan Lan committed suicide. The infant Hu Fei was hidden by his uncle and escaped.

The present-day timeline begins with characters recognizing each other from 18 years past, building tension.

After learning he is Hu Yidao's son and discovering the truth about his parents' deaths, Hu Fei dedicates himself to avenging them. He confronts and kills Yan Chi and his men, then prepares to face Tian Guinong and Shi Wancheng to fulfill his vow of revenge.

Tian Guinong and Hu Yidao were old rivals. Tian harbored jealousy and resentment toward Hu, which motivated him to orchestrate Hu's murder. Eighteen years later, Tian remains Hu Fei's primary antagonist, having ordered the original killing and continued pursuing the family through his agents like Shi Wancheng.

The uncle identifies Tian Guinong as 'the scarred enemy from years ago' during the rain shelter scene.

Hu Fei visits his parents' graves with Nan Lan to honor them and declare his identity. During this visit, Nan Lan helps him recover his father's hidden sword from behind the headstone. This moment marks Hu Fei's formal entry into his revenge quest, receiving Miao Renfeng's blessing to confront Tian Guinong.
