Founded in 1865 after the Civil War, the Ku Klux Klan’s history has run parallel to America’s own story. From the slavery debates and 1920s populism to the civil‑rights battles of the 1960s and the resurgence of far‑right extremism in the early 21st century, the Klan has continually reflected the nation’s darkest impulses, its ambiguities and blind spots.
