Kalyanam

Set in a close-knit town, Sarath Shravan Mukesh, the only son of Prabhakaran Sreenivasan, is hopelessly in love with his childhood friend Shari Varsha Bollamma, the daughter of their neighbor Sahadevan Nair Mukesh. As they grow, he struggles to voice his feelings, while Shari’s father quietly hopes to marry her off to a suitable Nair boy. Sarath is always by the side of his loyal friend Saiju Saiju Kurup and his much younger uncle Avesh Hareesh Perumanna, and together they spend most days at Sundaran’s garage Dharmajan Bolgatty. Within that bustling space, Sarath notices Varkey, an aging garage worker, who keeps being visited and loudly scolded by a drunken man—yet Varkey seems to shrug off the insults, leaving everyone curious about the hidden connection between them.

When Shari’s parents arrange a groom for her, Sarath’s heartbreak deepens and leads to a string of comic misadventures, including a brief run-in with the police. The drunken visitor’s taunts resume, and Sarath finally learns from Varkey the painful backstory: the man once sought Varkey’s daughter, but religious differences forced the match to be scuttled, the girl then married off to another family, and she died soon after—an event that leaves both men with lasting sorrow. This revelation, along with witnessing Shari accompanying her would-be husband, pushes Sarath toward a desperate act, as he contemplates suicide on a railway track. His parents intervene, and for the first time he admits his love to them. Prabhakaran reveals that they could have sorted things out earlier if he had spoken up, but now the advice is to move on, even as the emotional tension between love and obligation simmers.

On the eve of the wedding, Sarath slips into Shari’s room and discovers childhood keepsakes she has preserved, rekindling their shared memories. When they meet, Shari confesses that she has loved him since childhood but kept quiet because she thought he showed no interest. Now that both realize their mutual affection, she laments that it might be too late, and she hints that it was Sarath’s father who disapproved of the match. Sarath then confronts Sahadevan, who clarifies that he was never truly interested in the relationship and admits he lied to Shari. In a pivotal moment, Prabhakaran steps in to confront Sahadevan and, after some tense moments, signals the impending wedding the next day. The revelation comes when Prabhakaran explains that Shari’s calculated plan—threatening a suicide, if Sahadevan wouldn’t consent—helped secure the alliance. The very next day, Sarath and Shari wed in the planned hour, and the film closes with the sense that love has triumphed through Shari’s resolve and Sacrifices, with Sarath recognizing that her love was stronger than his hesitation, and he confesses that her devotion has surpassed his own earlier feelings.
