JUNG_E (2023) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

JUNG_E's ending is a mix of emotional sacrifice, daring rebellion, and uncertain hope. Throughout the film, Captain Yun, a legendary soldier voiced by the late Kang Soo-yeon, is shown to be the inspiration behind the creation of an AI clone; her memories are used to develop a killing machine under the corporation Kronoid’s control. Yun's last mission went terribly wrong, not because she was weak, but because her personal feelings—particularly her concern for her daughter Seo-hyun and her worries about her future—distracted her during combat. These feelings were evident when she looked at a doll given by Seo-hyun, as she fought, showing how deeply her bond with her daughter affected her.

Seo-hyun, the scientist and Yun’s daughter, eventually uncovers the dark truths behind Kronoid's exploitation, including disturbing plans to use Yun’s AI as a sexbot and other unethical experiments. Feeling betrayed and angry, she decides to sabotage her employer’s plans. In a critical moment, Seo-hyun also tampered with Yun’s memories, erasing her daughter’s existence from Yun’s mind. This decision was driven by her understanding that Yun’s emotional ties were what kept her from being fully free and effective, and that letting go of those feelings was necessary for her mother’s AI to have a chance at survival and independence.
