Jeppe, a ragged day laborer addicted to brandy, collapses drunk in a field. A passing baron decides to prank him, and his servants lift the unconscious man to the castle, dress him in the lord’s finest linens and place him in the baron's bed. Awakening, Jeppe thinks he has died and entered heaven, but the servants persuade him he is now the baron.
