Three young Danish fishermen—Svend, Knud and Valdemar—have just purchased a new cutter, though they’re still paying it off. While the story grounds itself in their everyday fishing life, it quickly shifts when their repeated military deferments end; the naval bell sounds, and they are summoned to serve as sailors in the Royal Danish Navy, thrusting them from sea‑to‑sea work into military duty.
