When Otep dies, Seph’s funeral is interrupted by Cecil, who reveals that his father had been a homosexual—a fact the local pastor dismisses as unworthy of a Christian burial. While sorting through Otep’s belongings, Seph discovers a hidden suitcase full of letters addressed to a man named Rum, an olive‑farmer in Spain, and a small bundle of Medinilla seeds. The letters expose a love that Otep never could live openly, explaining why he married Seph’s mother and kept his true self hidden.

Determined to honor his father’s unrealized dream, Seph uses a work trip to Portugal as a pretext to travel to Spain. Accompanied reluctantly by his church colleague Marlon, he follows the clues in the correspondence, eventually locating the Medinilla flower and, with it, Rum’s remote farmhouse. Rum is initially cold—his grief and anger at the church that tore Otep away leave him unwelcoming.
