At dawn in Madrid, the daily grind starts in Plaza de la Cibeles, where the central statue of the goddess watches the drama unfold. It narrates how a petty speculator, owner of an old building, asks Saint Nicholas to sink his property so he can erect a twelve‑story modern tower. The block’s residents beg the saint to prevent the scheme.
