HEM (2024) Ending Explained – Final Scene & Meaning

The documentary crew—Gabi, Ann and Micah—follow a local caretaker, Hudson, into the abandoned Rose Chapel after the sun sets and the generator is set to cut out at eight. Inside the crumbling building they find a fresh circle of candles, a schoolroom, and a room of wedding dresses that seem to bloom like a strange fungus. As the lights flicker and the generator dies, the stairwell’s door slams shut, trapping the trio on the mezzanine. Ann slips and breaks her leg, and the presence of Isabelle Rose, a bride who died in the 1941 fire, becomes increasingly violent: her ghost, dressed in a wedding gown and clutching a candelabra, stalks the corridors and assaults anyone who remains.

Hudson manages to force the door open just as police arrive, but the officers are quickly overwhelmed by the same vengeful spirit. One by one they collapse, leaving Hudson as the sole survivor. The film ends with the camera still rolling, the detectives later reviewing the footage and questioning whether the crew was drugged or if the terror was real, while the fate of the case—and the deeper story of Isabelle’s tragedy—remains unrevealed. The “hem” of the title thus marks the thin edge where the living world meets the lingering, angry echo of the past, a boundary that the characters cross and scarcely survive.
