Heat (2019) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The ending of Heat serves as a tragic collision between professional discipline and human desire. For the majority of the film, Neil McCauley operates as a master thief who lives by a strict code: allow no attachments, and be ready to walk away from everything in thirty seconds flat. However, the finale reveals that even a calculating professional can be undone by the allure of a normal life. As the walls close in following a botched robbery, Neil is presented with a choice: vanish immediately to ensure his survival, or stay to tie up loose ends and claim a future with his love interest, Eady.

Neil ultimately chooses to break his own rule, a decision that Robert De Niro identifies as the character's fatal flaw. Instead of keeping his momentum and escaping, Neil goes back for Eady, tethering himself to a future he cannot reach.
