The conclusion of The Green Mile is defined by a profound and heartbreaking tragedy: the execution of an innocent man. Despite possessing the supernatural power to heal and the physical strength to escape, John Coffey chooses to submit to the electric chair. He confides in Paul Edgecomb that he is exhausted by the hatred and cruelty he senses in the world, describing it as "pieces of glass" in his head. For Coffey, death is not a defeat but a release from a sensory overload of human malice. His willingness to accept this fate, despite his innocence, underscores the film’s central tragedy—he is too gentle for the world he inhabits, and he refuses to use violence to save himself.

Before his death, Coffey transfers a portion of his life force to Paul, a moment that fundamentally alters the guard's destiny. As he sits in the electric chair, Coffey offers one final smile to his friend. This gesture serves as a reassurance to Paul that he is forgiven and that the miraculous gift he now carries will be used for good. It is a moment of absolution, where the victim comforts the executioner. This transfer results in Paul living far beyond a normal human lifespan, a fact confirmed by the longevity of the mouse, Mr. Jingles. By the film's end, Paul is 108 years old, yet he views this extended life not as a miracle, but as a punishment for his part in Coffey’s death. He is destined to outlive all his loved ones, trapped in a lingering existence that forces him to bear witness to the world's pain just as Coffey did.

The ending cements John Coffey as a messianic figure, with his initials "J.C." and his sacrifice for others highlighting themes of biblical redemption. While the film deals heavily in karma—punishing the wicked guards and prisoners—Coffey is the one true innocent who suffers the ultimate injustice. This creates a bittersweet resonance that lingers with the audience. The story serves as a poignant reflection on prejudice and the failure of justice systems, yet it ultimately celebrates the endurance of kindness. Paul becomes the keeper of Coffey's legacy, carrying the "green mile" with him as a reminder of the miracle he witnessed and the friend he let go.
