Ending explained
How Good Grief (2026) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
In the final scenes Marc finally lets go of the numbness that has kept him locked away. After the painful trip to Paris—where he, Sophie and Thomas are forced to speak the truths they’d been sweeping under the rug—Marc returns to England and decides to sell the house he shared with Oliver. The sale isn’t meant to erase the past; instead, it becomes a way of honoring Oliver by turning the space into a canvas for his own grief. Moving to a seaside town, Marc begins to paint again, each brushstroke a deliberate act of feeling rather than fleeing.
The encounter with Luca, Oliver’s former partner, provides the decisive break. When Marc confronts Luca, he admits that his anger was easier to cling to than the raw sorrow of loss. Their candid conversation dissolves the bitterness, allowing Marc to see Luca not as a rival but as another person who loved Oliver. At the same time, a new acquaintance, Theo, nudges him back to art, showing that creating is the only path through the ache that had once silenced him.
By the film’s close, Marc is surrounded by his friends, his paintings, and a tentative openness to love again. The act of painting in his new home signals that he has moved from stalling grief to actively processing it, leaving the audience with a sense of hope and the promise of a fresh beginning.
