Insurance investigator Maindrian Pace arrives at the site of a train wreck, prompted by a request from an indemnity agent. He is tasked with examining the truck that caused the collision, marking the beginning of his involvement in a web of illicit activities.

At Chase Laboratory Insurance Research & Investigation Service, mechanic Atlee Jackson reveals their illegal operation to Stanley Chase. They discuss how they remove identifying features from wrecked vehicles to steal lookalikes, laying the groundwork for their criminal activities.

Pace is approached by Villas, a foreign gangster, who offers him $400,000 to acquire a list of 48 luxury vehicles by the end of the week. Receiving $200,000 upfront, Pace realizes the high stakes involved, facing severe consequences if he fails.

Pace attends his brother Eugene's wedding in Dunkirk, New York, alongside his girlfriend, Pumpkin. Despite enjoying the event, Pace is consumed by the pressing need to execute the car theft plan meticulously.

Back in Carson, Pace gathers his team, including Eugene and Pumpkin, to devise a strategy for stealing the luxury vehicles. They make arrangements to ensure that all stolen cars are insured, further complicating their criminal undertakings.

During a car race, Pace's brother Corlis attempts to steal a Rolls Royce, while Pace himself targets a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1, code-named Eleanor. The operation is chaotic, leading to a police chase initiated by the Mustang's drunken owner.

After the Mustang chase, Pace cleverly returns the car to its rightful owner, who is a corrupt insurance company executive. This strategic return not only serves to embarrass the owner but also distracts the authorities from their growing suspicions.

Eugene discovers that the Dodge Challenger they turned over was seen at a used car lot, prompting Pace to retrieve it. A wild chase ensues as he narrowly escapes security after dropping the vehicle at a wrecking yard.

Pace's operations take a dangerous turn when they inadvertently steal a Cadillac filled with $1 million worth of heroin. Realizing the dire implications, Pace sets the car on fire to eliminate evidence.

Despite acquiring all the cars from Villas's list, Pumpkin reveals that Eleanor is uninsured. Faced with a moral dilemma, Pace insists on returning it to avoid harming its owner.

In an act of revenge, Eugene anonymously tips off the police about the replacement Eleanor's location. This betrayal sets off a chain of events that puts Pace in greater danger as he embarks on a reckless mission to retrieve it.

During the heist to capture the new Eleanor, a massive police pursuit ensues. The chase intensifies as Pace evades multiple squad cars in a prolonged, exhilarating sequence that captures the media's attention.

As the chase escalates, numerous police and civilian vehicles are destroyed, while helicopters are deployed to catch Pace. Despite a well-laid trap, he manages to leap over a traffic collision, demonstrating his audacity and driving skill.

Although Eleanor is ultimately destroyed during the wild chase, Pace seizes the opportunity to steal another matching one from a car wash. This bold move ensures he remains under the radar as the police find and arrest the wrong person.

Pace successfully navigates through a police roadblock following the tumultuous car chase. As law enforcement focus their efforts on the wrecked Eleanor, Pace escapes, blending back into anonymity while continuing his life of crime.
