On a quiet road, Lise Cohen rides along with the drone of a radio broadcasting a war crimes trial, when she meets the man he once was, Conrad von Starker, the former Commandant who has arranged this encounter years after World War II. He thanks her for bearing witness to his past, a testimony that helped him avoid execution and paved his uneasy entry into postwar West Germany. After a measured tour of the camp’s ruins, the two briefly reconnect in a charged moment of intimacy, a stark far cry from the brutality that once defined the place.
The narrative then unfolds in a brutal flashback to the camp’s dark days. A shipment of female prisoners arrives, and the hierarchy decides fates in cruel, dehumanizing ways: some are sent to the gas chambers, others to brutal fates that leave lasting marks on the survivors. In a stark hall, women are stripped and subjected to degrading acts by SS officers, while the men who run the camp watch with a disturbing detachment. The regime’s perverse appetites are fed by explicitly staged material, and the atmosphere of power, fear, and desecration becomes the crucible in which the inmates’ endurance is tested.
As the camp’s routine of terror continues, the hierarchy’s depravity deepens. A jealous, oppressive atmosphere festers at the dinner table where Nazi theories are debated, and soon the staff’s cruelty spills into the most intimate of abuses. The nightmare grows darker still as the group discusses and enact horrific acts, including cannibalistic fantasies and acts of infanticide, culminating in the brutal killing of a fellow prisoner.
Starke’s obsession with an unbroken Lise intensifies. He lowers her into increasing peril, and the toll of his control escalates as she endures escalating physical torture and ritual humiliation. Yet Lise remains defiant, her spirit unbroken even under the most extreme pressure. A pacifist doctor offers a glimmer of humanity in the ruins: Fulvio Ricciardi plays the Prison Doctor who treats her and helps her face the emotional truth of her past, insisting that the choice to live is hers.
Through this mounting ordeal, Lise and Starker’s dangerous, warped bond deepens—she accepts a visceral, terrible form of devotion, even donning a belt woven from the remnants of those she survived with as a grim symbol of power and trust. The growing tension inside the camp reaches a fatal point when Alma, the commandant’s lover, acts out of jealousy, and Starker responds with lethal force to remove the threat.
Lise’s memory carries forward to the moment she gives birth, only for the commandant to end the infant’s life, deeming the child an impossibility in his cruel world. The past and present collide as Lise and Starker confront each other once more in the ruined camp, their bodies entangled in a final, fateful act. In a stark turn of consequence, Lise shoots Conrad von Starker, and his body sinks into the pit beneath the camp’s shattered landscape.
