Ending explained
How Gaslight (2021) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
Meesha returns to the ancestral palace after years away, only to find her father, Raja Ratan Singh, missing. Strange noises, phantom silhouettes and a series of unsettling events convince her that something terrible has happened, but everyone around her—especially her step‑mother Rukmini— insists she is imagining it. With the help of Kapil, the Raja’s loyal aide, Meesha begins to piece together a dark conspiracy.
Ratan’s body is eventually recovered, weighted down and hidden in the palace’s wharf, confirming that he was murdered. The investigation reveals that Rukmini, who is pregnant with a child that is not Ratan’s, had conspired with Kapil. Years earlier, Kapil had been taken under Ratan’s patronage after a childhood crime, but the king’s later humiliation left Kapil bitter. When Ratan discovered Rukmini’s affair with Kapil, Kapil killed the Raja to protect his lover and their unborn child. To secure the inheritance, Rukmini and Kapil tried to convince everyone that Meesha was losing her mind, staging sightings of her father’s “spirit” and even staging a fake drowning.
The ruse unravels when a woman named Fatima, who had cared for Meesha at a mental‑health facility, assumes Meesha’s identity after the real Meesha’s suicide. Fatima, together with the palace doctor, works to expose the truth. As the climax unfolds, Kapil attempts to finish off Fatima, but a struggle erupts. Rukmini, realizing Kapil’s murderous ambition, shoots him in the ear; he retaliates, wounding her and then falling into the pool, where she dies. In the ensuing chaos, Kapil tries to fire the rifle Fatima holds, but the barrel is blocked by Ratan’s cufflink, causing the weapon to backfire and kill him.
With the conspirators dead, the palace’s wealth is no longer a prize for the greedy. Fatima honors Meesha and Ratan’s memory by redirecting the estate to the Meesha Foundation, which funds education for needy children. The film ends with the once‑oppressive palace now serving as a home for those students, a quiet testament to justice finally prevailing.
