The girl who will become Frenchie endures orphanages and the Fontaines, earning her nickname. She rises to wealth by running a casino in New Orleans. She then returns to Bottleneck to confront the man who killed her father.

Back in Bottleneck, she buys the Scarlet Angel casino and begins to shape the town’s gambling scene. Sheriff Tom Banning’s reforms push most gambling to nearby Chuckaluck, where Lambert holds influence. Frenchie starts positioning her operation against Lambert's grip.

Frenchie discovers Lance Cole, a trusted ally from New Orleans, and invites him to Bottleneck to help run the Scarlet Angel. Lambert, feeling his gambling empire threatened, hatches a plan to ambush Cole’s stage. Banning steps in to prevent bloodshed and maintain order.

Cole falls in love with Frenchie, and his suspicions grow that Banning may also share her feelings. Diane, Banning’s former fiancée, grows increasingly jealous and suspicious of the mounting attention Frenchie receives. The love triangle intensifies as plans swirl around the town.

Lambert and his men ride into Bottleneck to seize the Scarlet Angel by force. Inside the casino, Tom confronts Lambert and arrests him for Dawson's murder. Lambert draws his gun and Tom shoots in self-defense, ending his threat.

Diane finally confesses that she killed Clyde Gorman, not Frenchie, shifting blame and freeing Frenchie from suspicion. Tom mulls over the messy web of treachery and love that the town has woven around him. The revelation seals a fragile peace as the dust settles.

With the danger over, Tom assumes Frenchie will leave town. Instead, she enters a Bottleneck jail cell, closes the door, and discards the key. Her resolve is clear: she will stay, and she will not go anywhere.
