Democracy the hard way! In 2000 Austria, after the right‑wing FPÖ entered government, director Christoph Schlingensief staged a provocative protest. He erected a mock “concentration camp” beside the Vienna State Opera, filled with asylum seekers under constant camera surveillance, parodying reality‑TV shows like Big Brother. The installation starkly exposed rising xenophobia, media spectacle, and the politics of exclusion, delivering a biting, humorous critique of contemporary democracy.
