The central mystery of Fool Me Once unravels with a surprising twist: the grieving widow, Maya, is revealed to be her husband Joe's killer. The shooting was not a random attack but an act of calculated vengeance. After realizing that Joe was responsible for murdering her sister Claire to protect his family's corrupt pharmaceutical empire, Maya used the same gun he had planted to frame her. She executed him to avenge her sister, setting off a chain of events that would eventually expose the dark underbelly of the Burkett family.
The supernatural element of the story is quickly debunked when the eerie nanny cam footage of the deceased Joe is revealed to be a deepfake. Orchestrated by Joe’s mother, Judith, the video was a psychological weapon designed to destabilize Maya. Judith suspected Maya from the beginning and hoped the footage would gaslight her into confessing. This deception leads to a fatal confrontation. Believing she has the upper hand thanks to a hidden livestream, Maya confronts the Burketts to expose their crimes. However, her military confidence and pride blind her to the immediate danger; during the standoff, her brother-in-law seizes her weapon and shoots her. Maya dies, but not before the live broadcast ensures the family's secrets are laid bare for the world to see.
