In the waning months of 1968, Kelly Jones, a savvy advertising executive in Manhattan, finds herself thrust into an unexpected role when she receives a lucrative offer from Moe Berkus, a covert government operative linked to President Richard Nixon. Her mission? To breathe new life into NASA’s public persona at a time when public interest in the Space Race is dwindling. With the shadow of her dubious past looming ominously over her, Kelly reluctantly takes on this daunting task and relocates to the sunny shores of Cocoa Beach, Florida, accompanied by her loyal assistant, Ruby.

Upon her arrival, Kelly crosses paths with Cole Davis, the steadfast and principled director overseeing the launches at the Kennedy Space Center. Their initial interactions are marked by friction as they clash over Kelly’s innovative, albeit controversial, strategies aimed at boosting NASA’s public image. Among her proposals are ideas such as securing corporate sponsorships and hiring actors to play the roles of scientists—methods that leave Cole deeply skeptical. However, as they navigate their challenges, the tension between them gives way to a budding mutual respect and undeniable attraction.

As the historic Apollo 11 mission approaches, Kelly comes up with a groundbreaking idea: to air the moon landing live using a camera installed on the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM). While Cole dismisses this notion as sheer folly, unbeknownst to him, Moe secretly backs Kelly’s proposal, but with ulterior motives. He reveals a shadowy additional task: Kelly must prepare a fake moon landing to air in the event the real mission fails. This highly classified operation is codenamed “Artemis.” Under pressure from Moe, who hints at revealing her not-so-honest past if she fails to comply, Kelly feels trapped but determined to navigate this intricate web of deception.

In a bid to manage this daunting task, Kelly enlists the help of a talented but largely unknown director, and together they secure an out-of-the-way airplane hangar, swathed in secrecy and heavily guarded, where the plans for the deception can be set in motion. However, as the preparations unfold, Kelly’s unease grows, especially as her bond with Cole deepens into something more profound.

When a crucial congressional supporter unexpectedly retracts his support, placing NASA’s funding at risk, Kelly and Cole join forces, striving to win back his allegiance. Their efforts culminate in an emotionally charged appeal that ultimately persuades a skeptical senator on the importance of their mission. Their collaboration not only strengthens their professional rapport but also deepens their romantic entanglement.

As the launch date for Apollo 11 approaches, Kelly uncovers the distressing truth that the fake broadcast is planned to go live regardless of the mission’s actual outcome, primarily due to sabotaged LEM camera equipment. Consumed by guilt and anxiety, she confesses her part in the deception to Cole. Together, they embark on a race against time to repair the camera, apprehensive yet hopeful.

On the day of the live broadcast, the tension mounts as viewers remain unaware if they are witnessing the authentic moon landing or a carefully orchestrated fake. A stray cat wandering unexpectedly onto the set serves as the climactic twist that confirms for audiences around the world that the genuine footage is indeed being transmitted, allowing the mission to be celebrated triumphantly.

In the closing moments, Moe grudgingly acknowledges that the truth has triumphed, offering Kelly a chance to leave her troubled past behind. She reveals her true identity, Winnie, to Cole, who accepts her entirely. As the Apollo 11 astronauts return safely to Earth, Kelly and Cole’s romance flourishes anew, embodying hope and the possibility of redemption in the wake of deception.
