An eight‑year‑old girl named Fia is wise and tough, a little like a vulnerable cousin of Pippi Longstocking. She longs to be strong and to shape the world the way she imagines, while secretly acting as a “mother” to her own mother, who can’t cope with everyday life. Across the yard lives the magician Bustric, a child‑like adult who becomes her anchor, defending her imagination and rescuing her from being branded a liar or dreamer when she starts a new school class.
