What Happens at the End of Father?

How Father (2019) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The genius of The Father lies in its refusal to be a passive observation; instead, it forces the audience to inhabit the disorienting labyrinth of Anthony's mind. Throughout the film, characters change faces and locations shift without warning, simulating the fracturing reality of dementia. By the time the finale arrives, the puzzle pieces finally settle into a heartbreaking picture: Anthony is not in his own apartment, nor is he living with his daughter, Anne. Instead, he is a resident in an assisted living facility, cared for by a nurse named Catherine, who bears a striking resemblance to the women he thought were his daughter. The apartment he thought he owned was a mental construct, a patchwork of memories and fading recognition that eventually dissolves into the sterile environment of the hospital.

Stripped of the false narrative he constructed to protect his ego, Anthony experiences a profound emotional collapse. In a moment of raw vulnerability, the character realizes he is losing his grip on his identity. He tearfully regresses to a childlike state, crying out for his mother and expressing a desperate desire to "go home." This regression highlights the tragedy of the disease: the once-proud man is reduced to a frightened child who feels he is "losing all [his] leaves." This poetic metaphor serves as the emotional core of the ending. Anthony describes himself as a tree in autumn whose leaves have all fallen, symbolizing the memories and facets of his life that have been stripped away by his condition. While the nurse simply tries to comfort him, the audience understands the profound depth of his loss—he feels untethered from the life he lived.

As he weeps in Catherine's arms, she offers a grim kindness, telling him they will go for a walk later, knowing full well he will likely forget this moment of anguish within minutes. The film concludes not with Anthony's death, but with a quiet visual coda. As the camera pulls away from his room to focus on the trees rustling in the wind outside, we are left with a symbol of resilience. Unlike Anthony, who feels he has lost his leaves, the tree outside remains full of life. This final shot suggests a cyclical nature of existence; although Anthony’s memory is fading, the world continues. It is a devastating yet deeply human conclusion to a story about the fragmenting of the self, leaving the viewer with a lingering sense of sorrow for a man who can no longer recognize who he is.
