Empire

Year: 1965

Runtime: 479 mins

Documentary

Filmed by Jonas Mekas from the 44th‑floor Time‑Life Building, Empire is a meditative study of time that foregoes characters and conventional narrative. The entire work consists of a single, stationary 16 mm shot of the Empire State Building, captured on standard 1,200‑foot rolls and running for more than eight hours, allowing subtle shifts in light, weather and perspective to unfold slowly before the viewer.
