The film concludes with Donald making the difficult decision not to kill his brother Carl, despite pressures from Claud Dubois, the gang boss, who insists Carl must be eliminated because he’s become a liability and a threat to their operations. Instead of succumbing to this demand, Donald visits Carl and, in a tense but compassionate moment, chooses to leave him alive, urging him to get far away. This act of mercy preserves their bond, but it also seals Donald’s fate. Claud, furious at Donald’s refusal and sensing a betrayal, places a bounty on his head. Donald responds by robbing a bank to secure money for his family’s escape, but he is eventually caught and forced to turn informant. His cooperation with the police leads to Claud’s arrest, ending his reign of terror. In the final scenes, Donald is shown serving an eight-year prison sentence and giving a television interview, which suggests a sense of remorse or reflection on his life choices. The movie closes with him alone and regretful, having lost his family and his moral integrity; it’s a somber ending that highlights how a life of crime ultimately leaves him isolated and broken. The ending underscores the tragic costs of loyalty and violence, leaving viewers to ponder whether Donald’s final act of mercy was truly a saving grace or a tragic sacrifice.
