Dry (2022) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Aaron returns to his dusty hometown of Kiewarra for the funeral of his old friend Luke, only to be pulled back into the town’s darkest secrets. While the locals suspect Luke’s death was a murder, Aaron’s investigation uncovers a far more twisted motive. He discovers that the school’s principal, Scott Whitlam, had been siphoning the modest grant meant for the school to pay off a gambling debt. When the headteacher’s wife, Karen, uncovered the embezzlement, Whitlam silenced her—and the rest of Luke’s family—by staging a “suicide‑murder” in the outback. The murder weapon, a Remington rifle, is later found hidden in the school shed, confirming Whitlam’s guilt.

Confronted with the truth, Whitlam attempts a dramatic escape: he douses himself in gasoline and threatens to ignite a forest fire that would devastate the drought‑parched community.
