Drawing Closer tells a poignant story about love, life, and the fleeting nature of time. As the story progresses, we see Akito and Haruna forming a deep bond despite knowing they are both terminally ill—Haruna with only a few months left, and Akito with even less. Their relationship blossoms into a genuine connection that encourages them to cherish each moment they share. When Akito nearly chooses to end his life on the rooftop, Haruna’s courage and her desire to make the most of her remaining days inspire him to reconsider and find hope.
Throughout the film, we learn about Haruna’s guilt rooted in a tragic accident that claimed her father’s life, which she believes she caused. This belief fuels her desire to apologize to her father, even if that means confronting her own feelings of responsibility. Her estranged friendship with Ayaka, once her closest friend, is also healed through their reunion, emphasizing themes of forgiveness and reconciliation, especially as Haruna experiences genuine moments of joy supported by Akito and Ayaka.
