The book behind the movie

Downtown Owl

by Chuck Klosterman

Hamish Linklater adapted Klosterman's novel for the screen and co-directed with Lily Rabe, who plays Julia. The film preserves fictional Owl, North Dakota, its 1983–84 setting, Julia's arrival as an English teacher, Mitch's school perspective, Horace's older local memory, football culture, bar conversations, and the approaching blizzard. It necessarily consolidates the novel's rotating interior viewpoints and wide network of anecdotes, placing greater continuous emphasis on Julia and her relationships. The Reagan-era small-town specificity, ensemble characters, cynical humor, and collision with a real weather disaster remain directly rooted in the book.
