Set in eighteenth-century Carpathian mountains, the film follows the Dovbush brothers who become opryshkos, or mountain outlaws, during a period of foreign rule. As the brothers become rivals—one motivated by wealth and the other, Oleksa, dedicated to his people—the region erupts in uprisings. The aristocracy seeks to eliminate Dovbush and shatter his growing legend, but he repeatedly evades them. To defeat the seemingly invincible outlaw, the desperate lords target his love for Marichka, a childhood sweetheart, in a treacherous plot.
