Dot and the Whale

Dot sits with a book and drifts between imagination and reality as the film opens with a storm-lashed vision of Moby Dick—the chase of the white whale unfolding across a nineteenth-century sea. That awe-inspiring fantasy soon slips into a vivid, kid-friendly adventure centered on the bond between a girl and the ocean. In a sunlit pool, a friendly dolphin named Nelson shows Dot how to stay underwater longer, how to communicate beneath the waves, and shares stories about the history and evolution of sea life. The pair becomes a team, exploring currents and creases of the underwater world, learning not just science but the language of marine creatures.

When a beached whale named Tonga sends a mournful wail from the nearby coast, Nelson springs into action, hopping from his pool and leaping over a cliff to reach the open sea. Dot follows, and on land she meets Tonga face to face, only to witness two boys, Alex and Owen, tossing sand at the whale. Their initial good intentions—trying to push Tonga back to the water—turn ineffective as Tonga lies weary, and the group realizes they need more help. The kids rally others, determined to gather as many local children as possible to rally around Tonga and give her a chance at life.

Dot sits beside Tonga and speaks with her, learning that Tonga’s family was wiped out by whalers and that the survivor has lost the will to live. Yet Dot believes in a hopeful path: try to place Tonga in the same pool as Nelson to help her recover, and find a way to move Tonga back to the sea. A shadow falls over the plan when a fishmonger with questionable motives eyes Tonga as a potential target, hinting at a darker temptation behind the rescue effort. Dot weighs the options, seeking a solution that honors Tonga’s wish to live while honoring the sea’s fragile balance.

Nelson speaks of a legendary figure, Moby Dick, insisting that the sperm whale truly existed and carries a quiet authority across the ocean. He suggests that if they could persuade Tonga to return to the sea, Moby Dick’s strength and wisdom might influence her decision. Trusting this idea, Dot embarks on a long voyage to Antarctica, where Moby Dick is said to rest from time to time. The journey is arduous, but it leads them to an aged, wrinkled Moby Dick, who offers a stark, sobering perspective: if Tonga longs to die, perhaps that is a choice she must make, rather than be forced back into danger. Yet the persistence and kindness of the town’s children rekindle Tonga’s will to live, and she begins to reclaim hope.

Back home, Dot and her friends—Alex and Owen—craft a new plan to bring Tonga into a shared pool with Nelson, believing that a partnership between the two whales could rekindle her spirit. They hustle to contact transport services, launching a fundraising campaign to cover the moving costs. The effort faces setbacks, including a theft by the fishmonger, who steals the campaign’s funds. The boss of the transport company intervenes, halting the misdeed and advancing the plan forward. In the end, Tonga moves to her new home, where the support of the children and the restored sense of community help her health improve significantly.

The film closes with a hopeful epilogue: Tonga’s condition improves so markedly that she eventually returns to the sea, a testament to the perseverance, teamwork, and belief that a young community can make a real difference for a creature in need.
