Eman Vovísek drowns his love for Liduška—now Danek’s wife—in alcohol. His violent drunkenness lands him in a mental‑health clinic where he meets uncle Hannibal, whose wife Matylda has left him for her love, Uncle Jonathan from America. Jonathan telegrams he will stay in Paris, Danek, anticipating Liduška’s visit, convinces Eman to pose as Jonathan.
