An ethereal montage of still photographs, the film draws on images Oshima captured during a two‑month 1965 research trip to South Korea, where he was deeply affected by the plight of impoverished street children in Seoul. A voice‑over weaves together diary entries of a six‑year‑old Korean boy with Oshima’s own reflections on the fraught Japanese‑Korean relationship, a theme he later revisited in Sing a Song of Sex and Death by Hanging.
