On a summer Sunday, Mrs. Hald sends her two twenty‑year‑old daughters on a cycling and swimming excursion to North Zealand. While swimming, their belongings are stolen, forcing them to flag down the first passing driver—district court attorney Mr. Hartsen, who is out testing his Chevrolet and coping with a jealous, combative wife.
