What Happens at the End of Descendent?

How Descendent (2025) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

Sean’s night on the school roof is the point of no return. After a call from his boss, he climbs up to fix a faulty light, slips — or is taken — and awakens tangled in a shimmering web that seems to paralyze his body while flooding his mind with vivid, unsettling visions. The film then follows him through a surreal series of episodes that feel like a programmed therapy session: he confronts the death of his mother in childbirth, his father’s suicide, his own growing misogyny, and a recurring image of a deer he once rescued. All of this is presented as the work of an alien presence that forces him to relive his deepest fears about becoming a father.

When the “aliens” finally release him, a lone stranger in a nondescript van picks him up and drives him home. Sean stumbles through his front door to find Andrea, seven months pregnant, waiting anxiously. Their embrace looks like a return to normalcy, and for a moment the audience is led to believe that the whole interstellar ordeal was a hallucination born of stress and trauma.

The final frame, however, undercuts that comfort. Sean’s head bears a strange scar, and the stranger’s quiet smile hints that something unexplained really did happen. The movie deliberately leaves the cause of his experience ambiguous: it could be an actual extraterrestrial intervention that used a virtual‑reality scenario to force Sean to confront his inherited anxieties, or it could be a neurological episode—perhaps a stroke or severe stress‑induced psychosis—during which his brain fabricated the alien “therapy.” Some viewers even read the ending as a pure psychological blackout: the alien ship, the therapist, the sketches on the wall are all imagined, while the only concrete reality is his return to Andrea.

In any case, the conclusion forces us to question whether Sean’s newfound peace is genuine resolution or the fragile aftermath of a mind that finally let go of its burdens. The scar and the mysterious driver act as lingering symbols that the trauma—and perhaps the “descendant” of his family’s unresolved pain—may never be fully erased, even as he steps back into his life with his wife and unborn child.
