On 12 December 1969 a bomb exploded in Milan’s Piazza Fontana, killing 16 and wounding 84; anarchist Giuseppe Pinelli was arrested and held for three days, exceeding legal custody limits. He fell from a fourth‑floor police‑station window; officials called it suicide, but a street reporter said he was pushed. In 1971 three officers who interrogated him were investigated for murder, but charges were dropped.
