How Death’s Roulette (2023) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
The ending of "Death’s Roulette" reveals a chilling cycle of revenge and guilt. Pablo Vega, revealed to be the mastermind behind the kidnapping, is actually the alias of Simon, a man haunted by his past and driven by a desire for justice against corrupt elites. Throughout the film, it is shown that Pablo/Simon meticulously orchestrated the game, manipulating the survivors and revealing their darkest secrets. As the story unfolds, we learn that many of the victims, including Esteban and Marta, hide shameful, criminal pasts. Marta once abandoned her sister Ofelia, who suffered from mental illness and was raped, leading to her death at childbirth. Marta’s remorse is played out in her willingness to sacrifice herself, though her true guilt is exposed when her husband, Esteban, is revealed to have abused young girls and her own daughter Lupe. The climax reaches a brutal confrontation where Marta cannot kill her husband, only to be shot by Lupe, who is manipulated into turning against her father.
Finally, the film ends with Pablo helping Lupe shoot Esteban, and her inability to pull the trigger on her mother shows her inner conflict. Pablo's final act is to punish the corrupt and reveal their sins, but ultimately, he and Lupe share a resigned moment as they watch the sunset—symbolic of the end of their dark, vengeful journey. The finale underscores how cycles of guilt, violence, and concealment continue to haunt the characters, leaving viewers with a haunting reflection on justice and redemption.
