Death Name (2026) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Sophie finally discovers that the vengeful spirit haunting her family is not a random apparition but the Gwisin of a betrayed husband who has been passed down through the generations. The spirit’s true name is revealed in the Korean archives as Chae Gang‑il. Armed with that knowledge, Sophie rushes to the hospital where her grandmother Hannah lies unconscious and where Jun – now unmistakably the Gwisin – demands that she join him in death.

In the confrontation Sophie forces Jun to hear his own name. The name hurts him, but it is not enough to destroy the spirit. Desperate, she lifts a kitchen knife and prepares to slit her own throat, hoping that her sacrifice will finally end the curse. At the last instant Hannah awakens and, in trying to stop her granddaughter, is accidentally slashed in the throat. As Hannah dies she whispers that she is glad to free Sophie from the curse, suggesting that the death of the matriarch—who had tried to bury the family’s Korean identity—breaks the cycle.
