Two sisters endure a tyrannical mother who rules the home, condemning them to lifelong maidhood. Jodie loves the older local doctor, which her mother opposes, while Beth dates a male stripper in Bristol, seeing no future with their mother present. Both plot her downfall after Jodie finds photos of H.R. Armstrong, who once discarded his own wife.
