Kuba Dařbuján, a destitute miner, supports his wife Markýtka and their eleven children. After a newborn is born, he looks for a godfather, finds only Death, and strikes a bargain: when Death stands at a patient’s foot he can heal, but if Death is at the head no cure is possible. Defying the terms, Kuba saves even a stingy brewer, traps Death, and creates a world where no one can die, unleashing unforeseen chaos.
