Mallikaarjuna, Nagarjuna Akkineni, is born with the divine grace of Lord Siva, and his parents name him Mallikaarjuna as he is destined to accomplish a great work. During his childhood, Malli faces a great tragedy as his parents and grandparents are killed by a huge black panther as they return from Kaasi. This incident leaves his younger sister Sailu, Abhinaya paralyzed from the waist down (Sailu had a talent for dancing before this incident). Malli then develops strong hatred toward Lord Siva.
Meanwhile, a demon named Andhakaasura performs a severe penance to obtain a boon from Lord Siva. Lord Siva blesses the demon with the boon that he will not interfere in the latter’s attempt to sacrifice a virgin girl to obtain complete rulership over the three worlds. The demon is advised by his aged friend Maayi that the sacrifice must be made a month having two solar eclipses, in such a way that he has to marry the girl and sacrifice her before the solar eclipse ends. This will render the demon peerless and a master over all the five elements.
The story then shifts to Malli, now an adult whose motive is to help people and take care of his bedridden sister. He falls in love with Dr. Maheswari, Anushka Shetty. There are many scenes where the atheist Malli forces the people of his colony, who include Rudraksha, Ringu Raja, the President, and others, not to worship, on account of his childhood tragedy. Then, one day, Sailu tells her brother that she wants to die because of unbearable pain. Malli questions Lord Siva about his condition and drives away in his car, only to meet with an accident. But Lord Siva intervenes and saves him. Lord Siva calls himself Saambayya, befriends Malli, and goes to his home.
The demon chooses Dr. Maheswari as his target for the sacrifice and prevents the aghoraas (who arrive at the temple) from having access to Mahi, on the first solar eclipse day. Malli rescues Mahi from the Aghoraas, and Mahi’s parents entrust Malli to take care of Mahi. Mahi’s parents decide to have Mahi marry a relative, Rahul, who is to arrive from the US. This advice is given by a saint known to Mahi’s family. On his arrival at the airport, Andhakaasura kills Rahul in the washroom, and possesses his dead body. Andhakaasura enters Mahi’s home and kills the three dogs who guard Mahi. The demon also paralyzes Mahi’s father, when he learns the truth about him. He also tries to kill Malli and Mahi, on their way to a temple, but Lord Siva intervenes by sending his divine mount, Nandi, who saves Malli. This infuriates the demon, who feels that Lord Siva has not kept his promise. He challenges the Lord, to which he replies that it was his duty to protect his devotee. The demon then decides to oppose Lord Siva, so he kills the saint known to Mahi’s family, impersonates him, and convinces Malli, Mahi and others that Saambayya is not a good person by faking his death at the hands to Saambayya. This makes Malli angry at Saambayya, and he returns the ring of friendship to Saambayya.
Finally, Malli convinces Mahi’s family that Rahul is Andhakaasura. Then, the demon carries Mahi to the spot of sacrifice and prepares for the ritual. Meanwhile, Malli is advised by the Aghora chief to worship Lord Siva, and he tells Malli that the purpose of his birth is to destroy the demon and the means to do it, as he was the reason for the tragedy in Malli’s childhood and Lord Siva saved him as Saambayya. Malli confronts the demon and is initially defeated, but he heads skyward to get a blessing from Lord Siva and finally destroys Andhakaasura by piercing him with the Trident given by Lord Siva.

This movie summary FAQ helps explain confusing scenes, plot twists, and narrative decisions in clear, searchable detail.
Malli's atheism stems from a traumatic childhood event. While returning from Kaasi with his family, a massive black panther attacked and killed his parents and grandparents, leaving his sister Sailu paralyzed from the waist down. This tragedy convinced Malli that Lord Siva was cruel and indifferent to human suffering, causing him to reject faith entirely.
The film establishes early on that Malli's strong hatred toward Lord Siva is directly tied to this childhood tragedy.
Lord Siva grants the boon during the demon's severe penance. The boon ensures Siva will not interfere with the demon's attempt to sacrifice a virgin girl during a month with two solar eclipses. This sacrifice would grant Andhakaasura complete rulership over the three worlds and mastery over all five elements.
The boon is the central mechanism that drives the entire conflict, as the demon uses this divine permission to pursue his plan.
The two solar eclipses in a single month create a specific cosmic window required for the ritual. The demon must marry and sacrifice the virgin before the second solar eclipse ends. This timing is what gives the ritual its power to make Andhakaasura peerless and master of all five elements.
The timeline structure highlights the urgency created by this rare astronomical event.
When Andhakaasura confronts Lord Siva about intervening, Siva responds that it is his duty to protect his devotees. The boon only prevents Siva from interfering with the demon's sacrifice attempt itself, not from protecting those the demon threatens. Malli is a devotee born with Siva's grace, so Siva is justified in intervening to save him.
The demon's fury at Nandi's intervention directly stems from this limitation in his boon.
Andhakaasura killed Rahul in the airport washroom upon his arrival from the US. The demon then possessed Rahul's dead body, allowing him to enter Mahi's home disguised as her intended groom. This possession enabled the demon to get close to Mahi while appearing trustworthy to her family.
The timeline shows this as a major turning point where the demon shifts from blocking the aghoraas to actively infiltrating Mahi's inner circle.
Andhakaasura killed the saint trusted by Mahi's family and impersonated him convincingly. To further sell the deception, the demon staged a fake death making it appear Saambayya had killed the saint. This manipulation successfully turned Malli against Saambayya, causing him to return the ring of friendship.
The timeline shows this as the moment where the rift between Malli and Saambayya reaches its peak.
The Aghora chief reveals that Malli was born with Lord Siva's divine grace specifically to destroy Andhakaasura. The demon was the very reason for the tragedy in Malli's childhood, the black panther was sent by the demon to prevent Malli's destiny from being fulfilled. Lord Siva saved Malli as Saambayya because his birth purpose is to vanquish the demon.
This revelation connects Malli's personal tragedy directly to the larger cosmic battle.
After being initially defeated, Malli ascends skyward to seek Lord Siva's blessing. Siva grants him a divine Trident. Malli then pierces Andhkaasura with this Trident, destroying the demon completely and saving Mahi from the sacrifice. This victory marks Malli's full reconciliation with his divine heritage.
The final battle fulfills the prophecy established from Malli's birth, his destiny to destroy the demon using Siva's weapon.
Sailu was paralyzed as a direct result of the same panther attack that killed her parents and grandparents. The giant black panther attacked the family as they returned from Kaasi, and while Sailu survived, she sustained injuries that left her bedridden from the waist down. This tragedy fundamentally shapes Malli's character and motivations.
Sailu's condition and her later plea to die from unbearable pain are key emotional drivers throughout Malli's journey.
Lord Siva reveals himself as Saambayya to befriend Malli and rebuild his shattered faith. After Malli questions Siva during his emotional crisis following his sister's plea to die, Siva saves him from a car accident and takes the form of a friendly companion. This relationship gradually helps Malli reconnect with his divine purpose.
The disguise allows Siva to work alongside Malli without the barrier of Malli's established hatred toward divinity.
Andhakaasura specifically selects Dr. Maheswari as his sacrifice target because she is a virgin and meets the requirements for the ritual. The demon prevents the aghoraas from accessing Mahi on the first solar eclipse day, demonstrating his determination to use her for gaining complete rulership over the three worlds.
Mahi's selection directly places Malli in opposition to the demon, driving the central conflict.
When Andhakaasura attempts to kill Malli and Mahi on their way to the temple, Lord Siva intervenes by sending his divine mount Nandi. This protection fulfills Siva's duty to his devotees. The demon becomes furious because the boon he received was supposed to ensure no divine interference with his sacrifice plans.
This event escalates the conflict between the demon and Lord Siva, making the demon decide to directly oppose the god.
